Identity-Short Film Analysis

The film Identity opens with a black screen and creepy music playing in the background. This builds anticipation for the audience. The word identity appears in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, in a cracked white font, which signifies the cracked identity of the girl who later appears in the film. The tone of the film and the characters mood is established with the grey discordant colours which are shown in the shot. The girl wears a white mask indicating her innocence and purity, however the mask is tainted with other colours showing the ways that society has affected her. The cameras quick cuts in this shot emphasises the girls disorientation, and also confuses the audience. A high angled shot is used to show the girl, suggesting somebody has power over her. It could also be a representation of her own low self-esteem. A reverse-over-the-shoulder tracking shot is used which is unusual to watch which also adds to the disorientating effect .This shot also could have been used to suggest the characters individuality compared to the extras. The camera backs away from the girl, distancing her from the audience, and the other characters in shot representing her as isolated.

It is made clear to the viewer that she is learning about Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, and that this triggers an idea in the character’s mind. We see a close up of her drawings that symbolise how she feels distant from others .This is the first time we have had concrete evidence on how she feels. This confirms her mood to the audience.  Everybody in the room except for the main character are wearing plain masks. This shows that she is different from the other characters and makes her stand out.

She walks alone through the corridor, once again showing that she is alone. By keeping showing footage of her on her own, it helps to highlight her loneliness. There is then a shot of a poster saying “This is what beautiful looks like,” followed by a group of girls wearing matching masks to the poster. This could show that the main character doesn’t feel beautiful, or similarly chooses not to conform and wear a mask. This could have been done to represent in society how people are made to think they need to look a certain way.

Everybody in this shot is wearing matching masks to their friends. Also, one girl changes her mask when she enters a different social group. This conveys the idea that people in society put on fronts and possibly pretend to be what they aren’t. The girl is shown to be playing with a pawn, and the background voice is talking about how pawns are used to other people advantages in chess. This pawn symbolised her in society. By using the pawn as representation we able to understand more about the girl’s position and feelings in the world.

Uncomfortable, scratchy sounds are begun as the girl starts running and the camera tracks her. This makes the audience feel as though she is running away from something, which in this instance could be something that is physically existing or it could be her running away from the cults and trends of society. The girl falls on the floor with the screen subsequently going black. This would have been a conscientious decision in order to build the expectancy of the audience.  The girl looks in the mirror to see that her mask is broken, portraying the fact that she has broken away from the norms of society, in effective she has broken free from the chains that were keeping her down.

Following that, the girl hesitantly taking her mask off which is accompanied by a crash bang which is slightly startling. This suggests that it is hard to be different in the modern world we live in but finally the girl feels like she is able to be bold and different. The girl smiles for the first time in the short time .A voice soon follows stating “today the truth found me”, showing her change of mood in comparison to the rest of the film where she felt very sad and lonely. A shot of the mask on the floor is shown in order to clarify her decision. The shot of the mask on the floor could have also been done to show that society’s opinion should be pushed to the ground and everyone should be free to make their own decisions. This is because these decisions ultimately decide your path in life. She is shown walking away from the camera, with everybody looking at her suggesting that she has power as everyone is interested in her moves, making her seem influential. However, this differs from the rest of the film as normally the camera is backing away from her, but she is moving away from the camera in this one, changing the tone of the film to. Also, the fact that she is walking through the people looking at her shows that she is more confident than before. The end of the short film shows a total change of emotions as the girl has been able to get rid some of her own insecurities which have been upsetting her for a long time.
