Bridget Jones Diary

Bridget Jones begins with music first and no image being shown. This sets the tone for the following scene we are about to see. The first image we get of Bridget is a frontal shot of her walking towards the camera. The camera angle helps us to establish a season which is winter and location, due to the fact that it snowing and houses are in sight, indicating that it could be a town or a village. The winter season is also shown due to use of props as Bridget is wearing a big coat indicating it is very cold. This use of props helps give the audience an idea of the country which this film is taking place. When the first footage of film is shown, there is a voiceover from a woman with a British accent, who begins to correspondingly narrate the footage on screen. This voiceover helps us to identify a storyline, instead of seeing direct dialogue; we see it through mime and dialogue. The camera angle changes and shows a landscape shot, which helps to emphasis the weather conditions, making us as the audience remember the seasonal period and also the possible location is explored. The landscape shot suggests that the seasonal point could be significant later on in the film. There is then a close up shot, which helps to show Bridget’s movements clearly, while also creating a highlighting that second character is in the scene. The voiceover from Bridget carries on at this point in the scene. The camera angle changes, and transitions into an over the shoulder shot. From this we can see an old women, who we can rightly believe is Bridget’s mother. At this point we also hear Christmas music, giving us an indication of time as we relate Christmas music with winter time. This use of the over shoulder shot allows us to see things from Bridget’s perspective, while also making her seem insignificant in the scene with her mother holding the power over her. The beginning of Bridget Jones is effective as it shows narration and mime, showing us the character inner emotions but also showing how she is portraying herself to everybody else. The use of both narration and mime is effective as it enables to set up the genre which is romantic comedy and the atmosphere of the film.
